U.S. Department of Energy – Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Services
Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS) was awarded the supplemental labor personnel (SLP) services contract at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in May 2010. This award of a substantial 5-year contract (with an additional 5-year option) represents a significant competitive achievement for the Akima family of companies.

Services include managing and recruiting supplemental labor at LLNL, which comprises exempt and nonexempt job classifications, many of which are highly technical and require individuals with advanced degrees and significant research and development experience. AIS serves the many LLNL directorates by effectively recruiting, managing, and retaining a large, diverse workforce, all within the confines of a highly classified and sensitive work environment. Interestingly, while most positions are of a scientific or administrative nature, AIS supports LLNL’s initiative and fulfills the laboratory’s significant goals for employing developmentally disabled individuals.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Johnson Space Center
Our work at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX, encompasses software development and analysis for the International Space Station (ISS) program. Akima supports NASA’s Aeroscience and Flight Mechanics Division in developing guidance, navigation, and control (GN&C) simulation tools and analyses for the ISS, including future space programs, such as the crew-escape vehicle, a new generation of launch vehicles, and interplanetary exploration. We perform ISS on board GN&C flight software implementation and verification, ISS multibody flexible dynamics and control analysis, and ISS time domain simulation tools development. To support ISS mission readiness, Akima conducts simulations and trade studies of integrated GN&C systems to verify performance and operational requirements for all ISS configurations and flight phases through design analysis cycles and verification analysis cycles.
Akima’s team at Johnson Space Center recently performed diagnostic and remedial tasks following a partial failure of the ISS computers that control the jets used to hold the station in a stable orientation. For performance on this very critical project, Akima received recognition from NASA “… for outstanding work to determine potential sources of computer failures, develop recovery and workaround plans, and identify methods to continue operations without the support of computer-controlled Russian systems critical to the safe and successful operations of the International Space Station.”
